The Lagos Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC), also known as KAI, dismantled 138 illegal shanties along the Ajao Estate canal on Thursday.
In a post on his X handle on Friday, the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, revealed that occupants of the demolished structures were paying substantial rents despite the illegal nature of the encampments.
In continuation of concerted measures to reduce the scourge of environmental infractions and illegal encampment in public spaces, the Lagos Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC) popularly known as KAI on Thursday demolished 138 shanties around the canal bank in Ajao Estate.
“The Lagos Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC), popularly known as KAI, on Thursday, demolished 138 shanties around the canal bank in Ajao Estate Canal where illegal occupants pay between N60,000 to N100,000 rent,” Mr. Wahab wrote.
The post included a video showing the demolition activities at Baale Shekoni Street in the Oshodi/Isolo area.
The footage captured officials pulling down marked structures as the occupants removed their belongings.
According to the commissioner, the operation was part of ongoing efforts to address environmental violations and curb unauthorized settlements in public spaces.
