Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Jr could reportedly be banned for their Champions League clash with Arsenal for alleged “indecent conduct”.
UEFA has assigned an Ethics and Disciplinary Inspector to examine the actions of Mbappe, Vinicius, Antonio Rudiger, and Dani Ceballos after Real Madrid’s dramatic penalty shootout victory over Atletico Madrid in the Champions League Round of 16 on March 12.
One of the key incidents being examined is a gesture made by Antonio Rudiger, who was seen appearing to make a throat-slitting motion allegedly directed at the Atletico supporters.
Meanwhile, video footage circulating on social media appears to capture Mbappe making a crotch-grabbing gesture during the celebrations. If the investigation leads to charges and a guilty verdict, the players could face disciplinary action in the form of suspensions, fines, or both.
A statement from UEFA read: “A UEFA Ethics and Disciplinary Inspector has been appointed to investigate allegations of indecent conduct by Real Madrid CF players (Antonio Rüdiger, Kylian Mbappé, Daniel Ceballos Fernández and Vinicius Junior) during the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 match between Club Atlético de Madrid and Real Madrid CF on 12 March 2025.”
Instances of similar conduct in the past have led to monetary fines and suspensions, setting a precedent that could influence UEFA’s decision on the current case.
Last summer, during Euro 2024, England midfielder Jude Bellingham was fined €30,000 and handed a one-match suspended ban for a crotch-grabbing gesture after scoring a late equalizer in England’s 2-1 win over Slovakia in the tournament’s Round of 16.
A comparable case occurred in 2019 when Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone received a €20,000 fine for a similar act after his team scored against Juventus in the Champions League.
Real Madrid will be eagerly awaiting UEFA’s ruling, as a ban for Mbappe, Vinicius Jr, Rudiger, or Ceballos could significantly impact their preparations for the tie against Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal. They are scheduled to face the Gunners in the first leg of their quarter-final on April 8 at Emirates Stadium, with the return fixture a week later at the Santiago Bernabeu.
