Caleb Onyeabor’s Reaction to the Speech of President Bola Tinubu

When you listen to our politicians read speeches and you are not on ground, you may think they are achieving better than their peers in the developed world.

The same way they inflate budgets and contracts, they inflate numbers in their speeches. First of all, where are the 10 new MSME hubs Tinubu claims to have built and can the government provide at least 10,000 names of the 240,000 jobs it claims to have created for auditing ? The government also claimed to have given large manufacturers 1 billion each.

Can they publish the list of the manufacturers and their companies or is he referring to Aso rock Manufacturers without businesses ? Billionaires without enterprises ? You said your government has distributed fertilizers.

The question is to who ? Show us a list or a database like Jonathan’s Agricultural minister used to do or are you sure Tinubu is not distributing fertilizers to farmers without farms ? President Tinubu keeps repeating the lie about fuel subsidy.

First of all, all developed countries pay subsidy on essential things like energy so as to make it affordable, accessible and available as a prerequisite for economic growth and development and Nigeria cannot be an exception.

For 1 year, they keep saying that fuel subsidy has benefitted rent seekers and smugglers the most and have failed to provide names of these so called thieves not to talk of prosecuting even one.

Who is fooling who ? Instead it is the common man who can no longer afford common things. Instead of punishing the so-called thieves you have been blaming since the past one year, you chose to punish ordinary Nigerians.

Tinubu claims 600,000 businesses have benefitted from his government nano-grants program. 600,000 is a large number. Where are the 600,000 businesses or is someone lying to the president ?

If the 600,000 is real, we would have known. It is equally sickening that people are complaining of hunger, poverty, unemployment and unbearable hardships and the first thing your speech writers deemed to highlight as your first achievement is increased revenue.

What is the essence of making trillions when people can’t feed. That speech didn’t address the key issues. Why aren’t the refineries working till now ? When will farmers go back to farm ? Why will you ask the people to sacrifice and yet you keep buying new SUVs, increasing judges salaries, building a new and extravagant Vice President residence like he was homeless before, allocating billions for personal use, allocating billions for new cars for the first lady and increasing the cost of governance and maintaining the largest cabinets ever since 1999 ? In one year, what have your Ministers achieved aside from “we will, we will” ?

If after one year of introducing policies that exacerbated the hardships in the country and a bulk of what the President said is that “we will, we will” and then list some programs with some big big numbers that only exists on paper and detached from reality, it’s a shame. We do not need any sooth sayer to tell us that the speech writers of the president have concocted lies, lies that even the President is not aware of because he chose to isolate himself from the ugly daily experiences of the Nigerian people. Unfortunately, with that speech, the President has chosen to play with fire.

Too bad his advisers and those around him are not telling him the truth. The handwriting is on the wall, he should open his eyes to see it now before it will be too late. ©️ Caleb Onyeabor #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria
