Britain’s public broadcaster BBC reports that its analysis shows the number of Russian military personnel who have died in the invasion of Ukraine has topped 95,000.
The BBC says it has worked with the independent Russian news outlet Mediazona to analyze open source data, such as information from cemeteries and the obituaries of Russian military personnel.
The BBC released the latest number on Friday, ahead of next Monday’s third anniversary of the start of the Russian invasion.
It says 95,026 Russian military personnel have been confirmed killed.
It also notes that as the bodies of a substantial number of soldiers who have died in recent months may still be on the battlefield, the actual number could range from 140,000 to more than 211,000.
Meanwhile, Russia’s defense ministry said on Friday that its forces had taken control of four settlements in the eastern Ukrainian region of Donetsk in the week from February 15.
The ministry also said Russian forces had recaptured one settlement in the western Russian region of Kursk, where Ukrainian forces have been carrying out cross-border attacks.
This apparently indicates that the Russian military is pushing ahead with its offensive despite suffering heavy casualties.
